In which city can you read signs like “Aparca your car aquí” or “Cuidado con los pick
pockets”? Travel guide investigates.

1.2 million Hispanics live in the Big Apple and one in five New Yorkers speaks Spanish at home. In the last ten years, the Hispanic population has grown by 400 000. This reflects the enormous increase in the Hispanic population in the States. There are now 42 million Hispanics resident in the USA, representing 15% of the total population.

There is a new language, SPANGLISH – a strange mixture of Spanish and English – which is invading the city. The New York Times recently said that it had become the city’s third official language. Its use is colloquial and often limited to short sentences and signs. Many New Yorkers now wear socketines on their feet, drop something on the carpeta, shop for grocerias and have cornfley (“cornflakes”) for breakfast.

Norma Rodríguez, a 45-year-old Cuban living in Washington Heights, says it forms a part of her life now: “Sometimes, you don’t realize that you’re mixing the two languages. You just hear them both all the time and find that you’re inventing new words.” Other people, however, are fighting against this new street language. Businessman Juan Cortés sees it as a sign that the Spanish language is being destroyed. “It’s difficult, but I try not to speak it – it feels vulgar to me.”

Meanwhile, a surprising number of academics have spoken in favour of Spanglish. José María Ruiz, from NY State University, even runs courses in Spanglish and has written a dictionary. “It is a dialogue between two languages and cultures. We have to accept that languages change and evolve. The only languages that never change are dead ones.”

1、The Spanish-speaking population has grown very fast recently.()

2、More people are interested in studying Spanish than before.()

3、Spanglish is mainly used in formal contexts.()

4、Norma Rodríguez doesn’t notice when she is speaking Spanglish.()

5、Juan Cortés doesn’t speak Spanglish because he feels stupid when he tries.()

The new studies show that fewer than half of the 9th graders in many of the nation’s l
argest cities, ever graduate. The studies clearly show that the dropout rate isn’t dropping. And,in particular, the dropout rate isn’t dropping for poor and minority students.

Amazingly, though so many people regret the rising dropout rate, our schools continue to lack formal plans—or any plans—about students’ motivation. Most schools have no game plans to ensure that students understand that school will be completely necessary.Schools expect the children to act as the school is important, but they never teach them to believe that.

Years ago, families ensured that the offspring recognized the value of school. But in many modern families, the children may fail to recognize the importance of school life just because these families may actually tell the children that school is not important.Since many families are not motivating their children to be interested students, young professionals, like teachers, may need to provide this training.Otherwise,it is likely that the dropout rate will continue to not drop, but only worsen.

Here are some strategies to convince even the most apathetic students that they must stay in school.

Ask students if they will ever need to work:The world has changed.100 years ago, factory work was the booming job,and it required no education.Today, factories are increasingly automated. Most computerrelated jobs require education and at least a high school diploma.

Ask students which century they will be prepared for:In 1900,the most common jobs were farm laborer and domestic servant—education not needed. Now,the most common jobs are office and sales worker—education and diploma usually needed.6 out of 10 people today work in a store or an office.

Ask students to devise a way that the employee could be replaced. For example, the coming trend in fast food is to use computers rather than people to run the restaurant.A prototype is apparently already being tested. The students should discover that most jobs that lack education and diploma requirements will be ripe for automation.

Take any long piece of paper. Now glue(粘)the ends of the paper together. You have mad
e a ring.

Take a second long piece of paper. Twist the paper once and glue the ends together. Now you have made a Mobius band(带子). For people studying maths, this band is uncommon.

This strange band was first made in the 1800s by a German man namedAugust. Mobius. Mr. Mobius studied maths. He wanted to find a way to show how this band works with maths. Understand it or not, this band has only one surface. You can find this out for yourself.

If you draw a line on the surface of the paper before you twist and glue it, the line is only on one side of the paper. The paper has two surfaces. However, if you draw a line after you make the Mobius band, you can follow the line around all sides of the paper. In other words, the Mobius band must have only one surface.

It is also very interesting to see what happens when you cut the band. If you cut the Mobius band in half once down the line you drew, you do not get two Mobius bands. Instead, after you cut the band, it turns into one large twisted ring. Then, if you cut this ring in half along the middle of the band again, you get two connected(相连的)Mobius bands.

1、What is a Mobius band?()

A、A long piece of paper

B、A paper ring for people to wear

C、A metal ring for music

D、An interesting twisted ring

2、Why didAugust Mobius make this ring?()

A、To help study a maths problem

B、To show it's the same as others

C、To show the only surface of any band

D、To find out how many sides it has

3、How can you change the two surfaces of a long piece of paper into one surface?()

A、Glue the ends of the long piece of paper

B、Cut the two surfaces of the paper into one

C、Draw a line in the middle of the paper

D、Twist the paper once and glue the two ends

4、What do you get if you cut the Mobius band along the middle?()

A、A long piece of paper

B、Two long pieces of paper

C、Two Mobius bands

D、One large twisted ring

5、Which of the following is NOT true?()

A、You can use any long piece of paper to make a Mobius band

Public goods are those commodities whose enjoyment nobody can be effectively excluded.Ev
erybody is free to enjoy the benefits of these commodities, and one person's utilization does not reduce the possibilities of anybody else's enjoying the same good.

Examples of public goods are not as rare as one might expect.A flood control dam is a public good.Once the dam is built, all persons living in the area will benefit------irrespective of their own contribution to the construction cost of the dam.The same holds true for highway signs or aids to navigation.Once a lighthouse is built, no ship of any nationality can be effectively excluded from the utilization of the lighthouse for navigational purposes.National defense is another example.Even a person who voted against military expenditures or did not pay any taxes will benefit from the protection afforded.

It is no easy task to determine the social costs and social benefits associated with a public good. There is no practicable way of charging drivers for looking at highway signs, sailors for watching a lighthouse and citizens for the security provided to them through national defense.Because the market does not provide the necessary signals, economic analysis has to be substituted for the impersonal judgement of the marketplace.
