Halloween is a holiday widely celebrated with different names in many countries.Althou
gh it originated as a religious holiday, it has lost its religious connections in the United States. It is now celebrated largely as a children's day, and many American children look forward to it for days and weeks beforehand.

The orange pumpkin is harvested at this time of year and is hollowed out, a funny face cut into it, and a candle placed inside as a decoration in the window.City folks, nowadays, sometimes use paper pumpkins for decorations.

Some years ago, the holiday was celebrated by dressing up in strange and frightening costumes and playing tricks on one's neigh bars and friends, such as ringing door bells, throwing bits of corn on the window panes, and in other ways making minor disturbances.

More recently, children come to the door to have friends and neighbors admire their costumes and guess who they are behind the false faces and receive treats of candies, fruits or cookies. They say, “Trick or Treat”, meaning, “I will play a trick on you if you do not give me a treat.” More recently, this practice has even developed into a significantinternational activity.Instead of or along with candies, children collect money for UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund). This special collection of money by children for needy children throughout the world is known as “UNICEF Trick or Treat”.Begun only recently, it results in several million dollars each year contributed to UNICEF.The collection box is orange, reminiscent of the pumpkin.

Body language is the “silent language” of every culture. It is important to know the body
language of every country, or we may be misunderstood.

In the United States, people greet each other with a handshake in a formal introduction. The handshake must be firm. If the handshake is weak, it is a sign of weakness or unfriendliness. Friends may place a hand on the other’s arm or shoulder. Some people, usually women, greet a friend with a hug.

Space is important to Americans. When two people talk to each other, they usually stand about two and a half feet away and at an angle, so they are not facing each other directly. Americans get uncomfortable when a person stands too close. They will move back to have their space. If Americans touch another person by accident, they say “Pardon me” or “Excuse me”.

Americans like to look the other person in the eye when they are talking. If you don’t do so, it means you are bored, hiding something, or are not interested. But when you stare at someone, it is not polite.

Learning a culture’s body language is sometimes confusing. If you don’t know what to do, the safest thing to do is to smile.25、Suppose you are meeting a new customer from the United States, how will you greet him?()

How to Present Business Cards

Business cards are less important in American culture than they are in Asian culture. But knowing the right way to handle business cards is a useful skill wherever you are.

Requesting someone's business card is a straightforward(直截了当的、坦率的)process. You need only say: "Do you have a business card?" or "May I have your business card?"

When you want to present your own card, you can say, "Here's my card. Feel free to call me if you have any other questions." Or, you might say, "Please send the information to this address. I look forward to hearing from you soon."

It's not polite to directly refuse a request from someone for your business card. Instead, you can say, "Sorry, but I'm afraid I'm all out at the moment." or "l forgot to bring them with me."

Time spent in a bookshop can be most enjoyable, whether you are a book-lover or only the
re to buy a book as a present. You may even have entered the shop just to find shelter from a sudden shower. Whatever the reason, you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings. The desire to pick up a book with an attractive design is irresistible, although this method of selecting ought not to be followed, as you might end up with a rather uninteresting book, you soon become lost in some book or other, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent far too much time there and must hurry to keep some forgotten appointment——without buying a book, of course.

The opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is, I think, the main attraction of a bookshop. There are not many places where it is possible to do this. A music shop is very much like a bookshop. You can go to such places as much as you wish. If it is a good shop, no assistant will approach you with the greeting: “Can I help you, sir?” You needn’t buy anything you don’t want. In a bookshop, an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished reading. You may want to find out where a particular section is. Then, and only then, are his services necessary. But when he has led you there, the assistant should leave politely and look as if he is not interested in selling a single book.

6. The best title for this passage may be _________.

A. How to Spend Your Time

B. The Attraction of Bookshops

C. Bookshops and Their Assistants

D. Buying Books

7. According to the author, the best way to escape the realities of everyday life is _____.

A. to take a walk in the open air

B. to stay reading books of various kinds in a bookshop

D. to chat with an assistant in a bookshop

8. In a good bookshop, _____________.

A. all the books there are interesting

B. you can find shelter from a shower

C. you are satisfied

D. you need to buy something you don’t want

9. An assistant in a bookshop helps you _______.

A. on your entering the shop

B. only when you want to find out where a particular section is

C. just before you finish reading

D. when you are reading

10. According to the passage, which of the following statement is true?

A. Time spent in a bookshop can be enjoyable only for book-lovers.

B. A book with an attractive design must not be necessarily interesting.

C. People go to bookshops only to buy books.

D. There are only a few places where it is possible to escape the realities of life.

Directions: Read the following passage and the statements that follow. Choose the best

answer for each statement from the four choices marked A, B,C and D.

“It hurts me more than you”, and “This is for your own good.” These are the statements my mother used to make years ago when I had to learn Latin, clean my room, stay home and do homework.

That was before we entered the permissive period in education in which we decided it was all right not to push our children to achieve their best in school. The schools and the educators made it easy on us. They taught that it was all right to be parents who take a let-alone policy. We stopped making our children do homework. We gave them calculators, turned on the television, left the teaching to the teachers and went on vacation.

Now teachers, faced with children who have been developing at their own pace for the past 15 years, are realizing we’ve made a terrible mistake. One such teacher is Sharon·Klompus who says of her students—“so passive”—and wonders what happened. Nothing was demanded of them, she believes. Television, says Klompus, contributes to children’s passivity. “We’re not training kids to work any more,” says Klompus. “We’re talking about a generation of kids who’ve never been hurt or hungry. They have learned somebody will always do it for them. Instead of saying ‘go look it up’, you tell them the answer. It takes greater energy to say no to a kid.”

Yes, it does. It takes energy and it takes work. It’s time for parents to end their vacation and come back to work. It’s time to take the car away, to turn the TV off, to tell them it hurts you more than them but it’s for their own good. It’s time to start telling them no again.

1.Children are becoming more inactive in study because__________.

A.they watch TV too often

B.they have done too much homework

C.they have to fulfil too many duties

D.teachers are too strict with them

2.According to historic books, women in the Song Dynasty used paper cut as headdress.()

A.Right

B.Wrong

C.Doesn’t say
